WE HAVE A CD!

Toyboat's first full length CD will have an official release party at OVFF (Ohio Valley Filk Festival) next weekend.

You can pre-order a copy for $17 ($15 plus $2 shipping) at http://www.Toyboatband.com - it's fantastic. The guys did a great job, and I'm really proud of them! I even got a credit on the album sleeve. ;-)

Toyboat Unclogged

The band is off at Marscon, in Bloomington, MI. Their Chief Roadie and Junior Roadie/Washboard player are not on the trip with them... there's a lot to do at home and the Junior Roadie has been sick. They have a show at midnight tonight. I'm sure it will be a fabulous one, and maybe we can start getting the guys to do some "tour updates" after shows.

I should be posting more

I haven't been keeping up here, and I apologize. I have some stuff from Duckon back in June that I need to post, but for now here are a few shots of practice for Archon (which is next weekend, the first weekend in October).

Gabriel has decided that he's part of the band, so I guess it's a five man band now... these shots & a short video clip are from pre-practice practice, waiting for Eric to show up.

This is just a short clip of a new song that I don't want to unveil yet. It's a good one! You can see our son wailing away on washboard. That's my boy! (gundo is so proud of him he can hardly stand it, like father like son.)

And here's Eric, who plays drums & guitar in the band:

Practice, Saturday March 8, 2008

I got a few shots of the band on Saturday and a short piece of practice. Not much because I was working on some personal projects, and the Junior Roadie was pretty wild.

And, last but not least, a video of them practicing "Last Dance for Mary Jane".

Here's the band at work

This was last Saturday (November 10, 2007). They're working up a new parody.

Who is Toyboat?

Or should I say what? Toyboat Band is the product of a very disturbing conversation between Eric Coleman and Daniel Gunderson. Eric, who is already an award winning singer/songwriter, told Daniel (aka gundo) that he would like to start a filk band. gundo's response was "great, let's do it". Eric wasn't convinced, because "we have two guitars, who would play drums?" gundo laughed, told Eric that he had played drums off and on for 20 years - and promptly went out and bought a brand new electronic drum set to prove his sincerity.

They quickly got Jason Neerenberg in on their twisted little plan. Jason, who had never played bass before, was handed one of gundo's bass guitars and told "There you go." They quickly realized that they needed a lead guitarist, so Mike Nixon was brought in. Practice began in earnest, and their first song was a version of "The Lady" (by Urban Tapestry) to the tune of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". Next came a blues rendition of "Mary O'Meara".

The whole idea of the band is to take filk standards and change them up, put them into new styles and formats. Mary O'Meara is a classic filk song - the words were written by Poul Anderson in one of his books, and local Midwestern filker Anne Passavoy provided the music for it. It's a haunting tune, and much loved by filker types all over the world. Toyboat has managed to take it and make it new, while still paying homage to Poul Anderson & Anne Passovoy. Anne & her husband Bob gave it a big thumbs up at Ohio Valley Filk Festival this past weekend - people seem pleased to hear it, and there were a lot of great comments.

All the guys are kind of out of their element. Eric, a well known solo performer, isn't singing much. gundo, a long time professional guitarist isn't playing much guitar and he's singing more. Jason has (as I've said) never played bass). Mike hasn't ever played in a band before. They're loving the new musical opportunities, and it's exciting to see a new filk band coming up. There aren't many bands that do filk - Wild Mercy and Dandelion Wine are two that come to mind. Toyboat is the Midwest's newest merry band of musical miscreants... and they're having a lot of fun.

Toyboat!

Welcome to the blog of the number one roadie for Toyboat, a brand new Midwestern Filk* Band.

I'm actually the wife of one of the members, gundo. He drums primarily, but also does guitar and vocals. The band consists of gundo (Daniel Gunderson, drums, guitar, bass, vocals), Eric Coleman (rhythm guitar, drums, vocals), Mike Nixon (lead guitar & vocals) and Jason Neerenberg (bass, vocals, guitar).

This blog is going to be about the evolution of the band through the eyes of an outside insider. I'll be posting mpegs, photos, information on gigs & merchandise, interviews and information about the members, and reviews of what's going on with the band.

*Filk is a typo of the word folk. It is now a genre of music all by itself, and tends to refer to music about Science Fiction & Fantasy related topics, done as parody of folk & rock music or original work.
